We’re looking for a Head of Engineering/CTO to join our rapidly evolving software startup in Melbourne, Australia. The Head of Engineering/CTO role is to govern and develop FMClarity’s software offerings in line with its strategic objectives through development and deployment of our products.
Key aspects are envisioning the product and service offerings as software business, leading implementation of web and mobile applications, being the technical outward face of customer engagement, and planning for risk and growth.

As a Head of Engineering/CTO, whether you are faced with a brand new system with a full galaxy of choices to make about server stacks, front end frameworks and supporting tools, or you have to assess integrations with technical debt, connections to legacy systems and a nasty performance cliff that has to be solved, you have the ability to figure it out, get the tech in order and help the team find a way to succeed.
As a current engineering leader you will have had exposure to a broad variety of front end and back end frameworks and multiple software ecosystems and will be able to explain patiently to clients and prospects about where the source of their pain may originate: anything from the network, database, back end, middleware, API, or front end - to the human factors that influence an application’s success or failure. Since we use AWS, you will have extensive experience with mobile and web implementations and know the ins and outs of how these ventures succeed, or why they fail. Whether you’re in meetings with prospective clients, consulting across multiple projects and teams or rolling up your sleeves to aid the team digging into code, your flexibility makes all the difference.
Background: ● Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related Engineering discipline or equivalent professional experience ● Minimum 4 years of strategic planning for software implementation, strategic partnerships, identification of competitive services, market and trend assessment, all with the aim of removing technical hurdles and ensuring company success. ● Past progressive experience as CTO, Head of Engineering or Solutions Architect in designing, building and maintaining software systems focusing on cloud, mobile and web infrastructure and deployment systems. Must have previous experience evaluating appropriate technology platforms for delivering company services. Must have previous experience with full stack Javascript development. ● Background experience in a startup launching digital products, leading strategic planning to achieve flexible business goals and prioritise development initiatives. Technical ● Experience in leading development of enterprise web & mobile applications in an agile environment with the last few years focused on react/react native based applications. ● Wide variety of computer languages, including at least one from each of these buckets ○ Must have: JavaScript, ES6 , React, should have ReactNative Framework and Apollo Graphql ○ Must have: Java, node.js, Should have: PHP, Python ○ Must have: SQL or NoSQL (MongoDB) ○ Must have: AWS services including EC2, ELB, S3. Should have CloudFormation, AppSync, SQS and open search. Azure good to have ○ Should have: experience with both GraphQL and RESTful APIs and other legacy approaches (e.g. SOAP) ● A strong understanding of CI/CD test driven development and source control management tools (git/Bitbucket). ● Unit and acceptance testing is at the heart of the development conventions you implement. If a new feature passes the tests in your CI pipeline then you are confident that it is ready to release. ● Platform selection and technical design - make sure that the platform that FMC is built on will function and scale for the future, avoiding any possibility of proprietary technology lock-in that will limit growth and operational functioning of the technology to meet the business goals. ● The ability to test all components in isolation. Think stubs and mocks as well as integration tests. ● Data mining, machine learning, AI, statistics, information retrieval. ● Experience with configuration management software such as Chef, Puppet or an equivalent.
